Analysis of Daniel’s Performance at the Shelter Shuffle 5K

 Future Olympian Daniel Tulloch

Here is the analysis of the 8th Annual Shelter Shuffle 5K Run. It was held at the grounds of the Former State Hospital in the City of Harrisburg, Pa.  Daniel Tulloch ran this race on Oct. 13, 2012 at 9:00 AM with a local air temperature of 35 degrees.  Frost was still on the ground from an overnight temperature of 27 degrees. It was a road course but the terrain was hilly. A 5K race is 3.1 Miles.

Daniel’s Statistics are as follows for this race;

·         First Place in the 19 and Under Category, beating local  High School Cross Country runners

·         Distance in the race was 3.1 Miles (5K)

·         Average Speed was 7.6 MPH

·         Average Pace was 7 minute, 52 seconds per mile
·         His time running the race was 24 minutes, 5 seconds
·         He burned 440.6 Calories in this race.
Daniel’s Goal’s for the year
Daniel has goals that he must try to accomplish each year until the final goal of making the US Olympic Team in the year 2028. This year’s 5K Cross Country goal is to run below 20 minutes in a 5K race. His USATF Goal is to qualify for Nationals. We are not at that goal of running under 20 minutes yet and we may not make it this year. I am confident from what I seen so far this year that he will qualify for Nationals. Last year, he did qualify but Rule 100c of USATF says that six year olds cannot go to National meets. At age 5, he qualified for the 1500 meters for indoor track and could not go. He is seven years old now.
I would like Daniel to make his goals every year in cross country, indoor track as well as outdoor track. This is how world champions are made.  People talk about sports people with natural ability. No such animal exists. To become good at a sport, it takes practice and support. Cross country and track and field is no different. Daniel has practice most days. Daniel does not practice the day before a meet and the day after a meet. He usually does not practice on Sundays.

Who Knows About Daniel?

You may think that Daniel is known by his relatives, friends, and school mates only. After all, he is from a suburb of Harrisburg, Pa. But because of the internet anyone can gain notoriety.  Let me give you the reality of the situation. He is followed by people in many nations on every continents except Antarctica.  He is followed by people from the United States, Kenya, Russia, Germany, Romania, United Kingdom, Netherlands, France, Canada, Hong Kong, Israel, Sweden, Ukraine, Australia, and many others.

They all wish him well!

What is Daniel's Standing in the World?

Using USATF Grading Standards for 5K, if you would do a worldwide age grading on Daniel’s 24 Minutes, 5 seconds, he is in the 73.88% in the world according to his performance. Earlier in the year, Daniel ran a 22 Minute, 57 second or 77.52% in the world. These percentages are both in the Regional Class of performing athletes in the world. That means that Daniel is competitive in the North East United States. His test will come nationally.

To put this information into perspective, 2008 Olympic Silver Medalist Hyleas Fountain seen here on my Greater Paxtonia Track Team in 1994 (age 14) was in the same 70% to 80% area. Today, she is in the 90% to 100% area. No one can dispute that she is World Class. In development Daniel is 6 years ahead of her in development.

This is Usain Bolt of Jamaica. He hold multiple World Records.
He is at 100%.

100% = Approximate World Record Level
Over 90% = World Class
Over 80% = National Class
Percentage:
77.52%
Percentage:
73.88%
Over 70% = Regional Class
Over 60% = Local Class

The Cost of Building a World Champion
Building champions cost money. Many people think that all people like Daniel has to do are go to a track meet for free, run, and go home.  Nothing can be further from the truth.  Let me give you some idea of how much it cost in one year for Daniel to train and compete. Remember, Daniel is young and still growing.
Cost of running and spike shoes this year $182
Cost of uniforms this year $120
Cost of memberships this year $40
Cost of entry fees this year $200
Cost of me getting in to venues to coach Daniel this year $40
This is the total cost of Daniel’s activities except for his travel and hotel bills, $ 582.00. Now look at the extra costs.  I had to pay about $300 so far this year in hotel bills. When you add in gas prices, food, and misc. things that we spent on Daniel in 2012, we are talking about real money per year.
My daughter’s tread mill is about to become too slow for Daniel to practice on. It is also tired and it is seeing its last days. I will have to buy a 14 mile an hour tread mill for Daniel soon. The cost $2,000.

 Daniel Needs Help for Nationals

Here is the reason why I opened up an account for Daniel at Integrity Bank. Daniel needs to save up and make money just for him to have money to pay for his travel expenses when he qualifies to go to National Track Meets. We need money for December 8, 2012 so that he can go to Balloon Fiesta Park, Albuquerque, New Mexico.  It appears that his mother and father will take him. I cannot afford to spend the money.

Please help Daniel go to Cross Country Nationals. We will take any amount of money, ($1 and up). All money collected will be spent on Daniel’s travel expenses only. No money will go to me or his immediate family.

The leading fund raisers so far in 2012

                                             Cicily Weager purchased Daniel's spring/summer 2012 uniform.
Cicily Weager of Lemoyne, a West Shore suburb of Harrisburg, Pa. purchased the expensive imported summer track uniform for Daniel.

Kathy Derr sold candy for Daniel in the Harrisburg Area and as far North as Montgomery, Pa.
She also acts as an assistant coach at Daniel's Cross Country Meets.
Here is Linda Beaver, a Milton, Pa. resident who sold over $100 in candy sales for Daniel. Her sisters, (Kathy being one of them) Deb Delaney of Montgomery, Pa., and Lydia Parker of Washingtonville, Pa. also sold over $100 in candy. The oldest sister Gerry Parker from Florida gave a large donation to Daniel's cause.

It takes people like the ones you see here to make Daniel's journey a success.
