The Health of your Children

Harrisburg High School in Harrisburg, Pa. where parents
are subsidizing their high school sports teams.

Children are getting fat with diabetes by the time they reach puberty. If you want your child to be healthy, you should be working to prevent that as soon as they are able to walk. You are probably saying, “I heard the script!”
Don’t get them hooked on sugars such as soda, candy, and sweets. Get them interested in more than just play stations, electronic toys, movies, and TV.
Amanda Williams
My Youngest Daughter Amanda the professional Model played on a National AAU championship basketball team and participated in events such as High Jump and Long Jump.

To keep my children physically fit, I got them interested in Track and Field at an early age. They participated in the USA Track and Field Program (18 and below) and the Hershey Youth Program (9 thru 14). As a result, in my opinion, 10 to 20 years after they stopped the sport, they are not big, fat, and ugly.  I cannot say that for many other children of the same age around the country who sat around and did nothing.  Overall, they seem to be healthier and fit to do physical work.  According to some research, young women who are active in sports have less teenage pregnancy problems than young girls who are not participating in any positive activities.

This is Stephanie. She has an MBA, her own business with
a 6 figure paycheck. She played basketball and ran
hurdles for her high school and went to USATF Nationals twice. She is
the mother of  Daniel who at age 7 is a track and field
star in his own right. He is already a veteran of USATF Cross Country Nationals.

Sport activities seem to transfer from children to grandchildren. I have a grandson that runs in the USA Track and Field Program and the United Age Group Track Coaches Association, Inc. (UAGTCA) program. This program serves children 18 Years and below. These meets are directed primarily towards Youth athletes. He is turning out to be one of the fastest 7 year olds in the Northeast United States. He is also more physically fit than most children. Another benefit in the future will be a pickup of his self-esteem. Not to mention a shot at a fully paid scholarship to a college or university.

Track and Field is just one sport where you can find programs for your children. Other sports have non-profit private programs to help develop your children such as baseball, football, hockey, and basketball. It is easier to find these non-profit sports organizations by using the internet. It was not that simple when my children were growing up.
You might say, “Well I will let the public school sports programs work with my children.” That is fine except, the school system is not in place to teach your child the art of competition. Plus in the future, the schools may have other problems that will take precedents over sports.

Congress of the United States

The Politics of “Stop You.”
You see this in the US Congress, when someone wants to do something; some other group makes it their business to stop them. They have the same situation in state houses and in municipalities. When someone tries to start something, another group makes it their business to shut them down. That is why little gets done in communities.
The same with the public school system. Many schools advertise sports programs for their students. But they take the position that playing public sports is a privilege, not a right of the student. On the other side of the issue are the people who do not like people who play sports. They claim that sports people get away with murder. They want them punished for any little thing that they do. How; by taking away their right to play a sport.
The school system is a political organization and must satisfy everyone involved. That means if your child is one minute late for school or class, the school can and many times will stop them from playing in the upcoming game.  If they get grades that they feel is not what they want to see, they take away the right to play sports. I know one case where some children were caught fighting on a weekend. It had nothing to do with the school. It was not on school grounds. However, they were suspended from playing in the next three games on the school team.
The justification is that these children are role models. Yea and my mother and father was born on the planet Mars! These children never signed up to be anyone’s role model. That is what parents are for. This is the excuse that many parents tell the schools. The real problem is that here is a way that these pudgy little parents can get back at people playing sports.
As a result, children just do not participate in school programs of any kind. They say that they do not need the privilege. You are starting to see the result in society. Children are growing up knowing nothing or doing nothing except getting fat around the middle.
We also have the children who play when they feel like it or don’t practice to become competitive. They may make the team but gets little playing time. The parents of these children will go to the schools complaining that their child does not get playing time and that a few good players should not get the most playing time. They want everyone to have an equal time playing the game.
So the team never makes the playoffs. They can never have a chance to make the state championships. Because your team finishes near the bottom of your section, college scouts never notice your child. Children are not stupid. They learn from others and will not waste their time participating.

The School Budget Crisis
So you think the school sports programs are going to be around forever?  I would not count on it! Have you noticed that the federal budget is out of control? Congress over the years has given states, counties, municipalities, and school districts less money just about every year for the past 30 years.  One of the first things to go in many school budgets has been sports programs.  Some schools have gone to a “Pay to Play” sports program for the children lucky enough to make the team.
Some schools have to consolidate middle and high schools in their system. Some school districts close their high school all together. If the surviving school is lucky to keep their sports programs, your children may find it difficult to be selected to make the team or play if they do make the team.
As school budgets receive less money in the future, non-profit sports programs will look like a better way to go if you are looking for your children to get a good look from a college or university.
